Morningtide

Conflict continues in the world of Lorwyn as mighty races find common ground – and power – by forming new tribes based on their classes. Morningtide was released in February of 2008 and is the second set in the Lorwyn block. Unlike Lorwyn, which focuses on the 8 races, Morningtide shifts its focus to the five different classes: Soldiers, Shamans, Wizards, Warriors, and Rogues. Mechanics include Prowl, Kinship, and Reinforce. Prowl and Kinship are class specific, applying to Rogues and Shamans, where as Reinforce does not have a class alliance. Notable cards include Bitterblossom, Mutavault, Spritebellows, and Reveillark.

Lorwyn

Far from the strife of Dominaria lies Lorwyn, an idyllic world where races of fable thrive in perpetual midsummer. Lorwyn is covered with dense forests, meandering rivers, and gently rolling meadows. The sun never quite dips below the horizon, and winter is entirely unknown.

Lorwyn was released in October of 2007 and is the first set in the Lorwyn block. Shadowmoor and Lorwyn each have two sets, instead of the typical three, and rotated in and out of standard together. Lorwyn was said to take inspiration from the folklore of the British Isles. Lorwyn focused on different tribes: Elementals, Elves, Faeries, Giants, Goblins, Kithkin, Merfolk, Shapeshifers, and Treefolk. Lorwyn also introduced us to Planeswalkers, which was an entirely new card type never before seen in MTG. The first five Planeswalkers were Ajani Goldmane, Jace Beleren, Liliana Vess, Chandra Nalaar, and Garruk Wildspeaker. Notable cards include Ponder, Thoughtseize, Shriekmaw, Ingot Chewer, Mulldrifter, Profane Command, and Cryptic Command.
